Have you noticed many changes in the industry over the years?
The biggest changes have been the amount of baymen and the amount of clams. Both are way down. In the 70's there were over 10,000 people clamming. Now you can count the number of guys on two hands. The quantity of clams is down by about 60%.
Do you ever wish you chose a different career path? Like an office job.
I'm not an indoor person. You wouldn't find me in an office. I don't look back. My job has been a lot of hard work but I love it and I wouldn't trade it for anything.
Do you eat clams anymore or are you tired of them?
I love to eat clams. They're delicious and good for you. Fresh seafood is great. I don't think I'll ever get tired of them.
Can you tell us about Clam Power? How did the idea come about and when did you start it?
I started Clam Power back in the early seventies when I was a student in college. Back then there were thousands of people clamming and the industry was thriving. These were also turbulent times. There was flower power, power to the people, white power, black power, etc. I came up with a power one day while sitting at my desk. I was trying to thnk about something that would make people smile and feel good, clam power was it, a thriving industry, loads of baymen, and lots of clams. I made some shirts and my friends loved them. It seems a lot of other people did too because soon the shirts were all over, but not through me. Others copied the silk screen and put the shirts out. As the clams faded the shirt faded too. About 6 months ago, my sons and I brought back the shirt this time with a trademark.
I know my original idea succeeded. When people get these shirts they smiled! Many had these shirts 20-25 years ago. They were younger, things seemed easier and they remember old times that makes them feel good which makes me feel good too.
