As Santa Claus and his reindeer touched down on the roofs of Main Street, Sayville's third annual Miracle on Main celebration, held on November 28th, kicked off the holiday season.
The party began with the morning parade down the bustling thoroughfare of Sayville. Local organizations filled the streets as they spread their holiday cheer. Parade participants dressed as Christmas stockings, trees, even reindeer to the delight of onlookers lining the sidewalks. Santa closed the parade as his sleigh rolled past the festive storefronts of Sayville's local merchants.
The celebration continued that evening with the lighting of the Main Street Christmas Tree. The bulbs burst into colorful life on the towering tree at six o'clock. Children and adult revelers enjoyed the simple pleasure and nostalgia of carnival games and holiday films projected on oversized screens.
Santa posed with the eager children who waited to meet the jolly red man. Wishful letters in hand, boys and girls joined Santa in his sleigh for a photograph as his reindeer stood close at hand.
Who knew so much could be done with gingerbread and candy? The Gingerbread House competition proved as impressive and inspiring as it does each year. Lighthouses, trains and a holiday-decorated doorframe rounded out the cozy Christmas abodes. A stunning recreation of St. Ann's Church, complete with a Golden Graham roof and stained-glass windows of sugary perfection, won the top award.
Sayville residents and visitors alike look forward to the next celebration in 2010!
