Barbeques & Pumpkins & Pie! Oh my!
Despite the rain, Sayville's 3rd Annual Fall Festival is a Scrumptious Success

Text & Photography by Rob Van Wyen on 10.26.2009

Sayville's Fall Festival was two days of fun, food and live music. Though many of the events were canceled on Saturday due to forecasts of heavy showers, it didn't stop hoards of crowds from flooding the parks the following day.

The Battle of the BBQ Brethren, presented by RUB BBQ, a NY State BBQ Championship, was held on Sunday. Teams geared up for competition from Friday evening until the close of the festival on Sunday in hopes of capturing the crown for this year's champion. The BBQ also featured delicious foods, including bratwurst fired up on the world's largest grill (65' long and 20' high).

Across the street at the Common Ground Park, The Chamber of Commerce was catering to the likes of local creatives with the 2nd Annual Jack O' Lantern competition and the 1st Annual Bake-Off. The Bake-Off brought in over 100 entries of breads, muffins, loaves, pies, tarts, pastries, cakes, cookies, brownies and bars. Eight judges, including two time contestant Chef Robert Hesse from Hell's Kitchen, had the opportunity of crowning this year's queen of sweets, Janet Romano for her cheesecake with chocolate.

While the judges recovered from a sugar high, Lea Olsen's "Witches Brew" took first place in the Jack O' Lantern contest with David Vonzwehl's "Ice Queen" and Audrey Sweetwood's "Wicked Witch" trailing closely behind.

As 'Monster Mash' and 'Thriller' blasted through the air, countless costumed children brought our fun-filled weekend to a close, boogying down in the Halloween Dance Party.

A special thanks to the Chamber of Commerce for putting on another successful Fall Festival!
