Q&A: Down The Rabbit Hole
 Print  |   Share
illustrate the other sensations with a little wink.

Q: You appear to have a creative background? What did you do before
opening your boutique?

I was a competitive figure skater for the greater part of my life, but I have always been interested in anything artistic. I studied art and art history at Sarah Lawrence College, and use any excuse to go into the city to a museum or art gallery.

Q: Have you ever thought about creating your own wine? or label?
Too much responsibility!!! No, I kid. I think that it would be a blast to be involved with blending a wine, but horticulture has never been my strong suit. Even a silk plant is in trouble when left in my care!!
A label might be a little bit more my speed though. Most of my bottles have the most intriguing labels. They are quite lovely, its like I've got my own private art gallery.

Q: How often do you have tastings?
I hold tastings every day. It is important for everyone to be exposed to as many wines as they can. I love creating a dialogue between my customers! Everyone's palette is completely different and to better understand one's own interests, it is so important to swirl, swish and savor as often as possible!

Q: How do you select your stock?
I taste, taste, taste! I am a research fanatic. The winemakers have sort a close knit, rat pack mentality in that a winemaker and his buddies will all swap ideas and use each other's material. I'm sure there are never any musical medleys, but you get the idea. So when I find a wine I love, I just research what the winemaker's friends and colleagues are doing, I try to get my hands on a bottle and if I think its up to snuff, I'll bring it into my shop. I've tried to make it my mission to find the most delicious under the radar wine as possible.

Q: What countries do you carry wine from?
I carry wines from all over the world. Long Island and the rest of north and South America, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Austria, France, Italy, Spain, and Portugal.

Top 3 Favorites in Sayville
Places to visit
1. Blue Island Seafood Market. I love to pick up some oysters on the half shell and chat with Chris the owner and Mike the chef as he prepares the world's best mignonette sauce. Its heaven to couple that with some Barefoot Contessa biscuits from the Sweet Gourmet!
2.The Sayville General Store. They always have such unique and lovely things. Whenever I can I buy their Votivo candles for my shop.
3. Go to the beach at sunset!!! Bring a blanket, or someone to hug and watch the sun slip into the tangerine and fuchsia colored bay and listen as the gulls and waves provide all of the musical ambiance one could ever need.

Places to dine
1.Sweet Mandarin. I eat their sashimi everyday! It is incomparably fresh and delicious.
2.The Sayville Chocolatier. Yes, I'm capable of eating an entire meal of chocolate. My best friend, Jessy, and her family, the Verbargs, (the owners of the Chocolatier) have been treating me to scrumptious confections since I was little! As my next-door neighbor, they are dangerously close! IN Pairing chocolate and wine I have reached the heights of hedonism!! So decadent!
3. Cafe Joelle. They allow you to bring your own wine so of course I delight in any opportunity to pair my wines.

Things to do
1. Walk Main St. with Ralph's Italian ice in hand, then to take the pace down a notch, window shop my way to Starbucks. Its so decadently European to sip an espresso with a book (that Mary Ann from Runaway Bay Books generously special ordered) and sit outside with my dog and watch the world pass by.…
