DS Bloggers: Pam Varacek

Hello! I am Pam Varacek, owner of Fireflies on 19 Main Street in Sayville. My mother Mary and I have owned Fireflies for 6 years. We specialize in children's items from clothing to toys and even have a party room in the back of the store - Pixie Pal Parties - which specializes in themed birthday parties such as Princess, Spa, Webkinz, Movie Star, American Girl Tea Parties, beading parties and more. Michael from DiscoverSayville.com has asked me to write a blog on a week in the life (Sunday through Saturday) at Fireflies. This blog thing is very new to me, I have never actually read a blog before so please hang in there and I will try my best.

Since Sundays are usually my day off, I was not in the store on my first day - although my mind is always still there, always worrying always thinking about what needs to be done, what can be improved on, etc. I actually spent the day at home recovering from the busy day before. I had 2 children's birthday parties - one was a spa party complete with facials, manicures and pedicures. Then after a 45 minute break we had a Secret Fairy Party. Since it is a Secret, I cannot tell you about it but you can call the store to get more details!

Monday my family and I took some time off for much needed family time. We went to NYC and went to American Girl Store (for my 40th birthday), FAO Schwartz and of course the big tree. As much as we enjoyed it, it was so great to get home to our much smaller town.

Tuesday is the first of our late nights for the holidays. I am fighting a bad cold and am exhausted but I remind myself how much I love my job - which I truly do! The store is really busy at lunch time but is definitely pretty quiet after 6. I decided to close an hour earlier than planned since I am feeling pretty bad.

Wednesday and Thursday are very busy and I am starting to feel better. Just trying to keep up with wrapping and helping the customers. It can be tough because usually during the week, there is only one of us at the store at a time (there is only 2 of us that actually work there!). My main concern is to not take so long so customers don't have to wait in line. My goal is to make every customer feel welcomed for their shopping experience to be nice and easy with no stress. Hopefully I am delivering that.

Friday - since I have a few morning hours off to myself I decide to use a gift certificate and coupon at Banana Republic at Smith Haven Mall to shop for presents for me-always a special treat that I do every year. I get there at 10:15AM What a nightmare. It was so busy and noisy and crowded. I shop at Banana and find a sweater I like and proceed to wait on line for 20 minutes. The sales person was not very friendly. Next I go over to the Gap - since my coupon is also good there as well - I find some goodies and head over to the line. Again it is long and I place my items on the counter. No hello, nothing. Only to tell me that 2 coupons are no good for the store. She rings me up, I give her my money, she practically thrusts the change back at me dropping it all over the counter. I then stand there for a minute and she gives me a look to say " Yeah what do you want?" I tell her I didn't get a receipt "Oh sorry" hands it to me-no…
