Some tips to get better photos
Stoop to their level
If you are shooting kids or pets, get down to their eye level. Don't be afraid to lay in the grass to get a good photo.
Use a nice background
A distracting background can take away from the photo. It is as important as foreground. All the elements need to come together.
Flash
Don't be afraid to use a flash outdoors to help eliminate shadows.
Get close
Fill the frame with what you want, no reason for empty space.
Digital effects
If you bring your photos into photoshop, don't go crazy, be subtle with your adjustments.
Motion
Don't be afraid to move the camera as you shoot to follow your subject. A blurry background with a focused subject can show movement.
