F.Stop 2008: Call for Entries
The Discover Sayville Photo Contest

Text by Michael Wikan on 10.05.2008

Last year's F.Stop 2007, the Discover Sayville Photo Contest, was such a success we had no choice but to bring it back. The only difference is the name, it's now called F.Stop 2008, the Discover Sayville Photo Contest! With well over 100 entrees last year it was a tough decision, but we found three talented winners. No rules (maybe a few) and no theme. We are not your parents, we don't tell you what to do. You can submit any photo you want, as long as you took it. Wait...that sounds like a rule.

Anyone can participate. Need help with a subject? You can always attend one of the many Sayville events to get some good shots.

A committee of 5 judges will determine the winners. Photos will be judged on composition, lighting and most important, creativity.

Rules (sort of)
+ You must Live, Work, Play or Visit Sayville.
+ Two entries per person. First two entries will be accepted anything after that will not be judged. Maybe, we can be bribed.
+ You must submit your photos in 800x600 72 dpi format. Please save a version of the high resolution photo, because when you win we will need it.
+ Contest ends Wednesday, December 31, 2008 at 11:58pm. We're ending 2 minutes early so you can celebrate the ringing in of the New Year.
+ Winners will be announced via email and on DiscoverSayville.com
+ Email your entries to contest@discoversayville.com. Please provide: Name, email, phone number & address.

Winners will be interviewed about their photo and featured on DiscoverSayville.com

Prizes donated by
+ Collins & Main Restaurant

+ Flourish Everyday
+ Fireflies
+ And more!

Special thanks to:
Mr. Cross from the Sayville High School for encouraging his students to participate.

Some tips to get better photos
Stoop to their level
If you are shooting kids or pets, get down to their eye level. Don't be afraid to lay in the grass to get a good photo.

Use a nice background
A distracting background can take away from the photo. It is as important as foreground. All the elements need to come together.

Flash
Don't be afraid to use a flash outdoors to help eliminate shadows.

Get close
Fill the frame with what you want, no reason for empty space.

Digital effects
If you bring your photos into photoshop, don't go crazy, be subtle with your adjustments.

Motion
Don't be afraid to move the camera as you shoot to follow your subject. A blurry background with a focused subject can show movement.
