Is photography a profession, hobby or was this a lucky shot?
Photography is both my hobby and my profession but more accurately - it's my passion. I've been taking pictures since my freshman year in high school and have just recently discovered that I want to spend the rest of my life taking pictures.
What kind of camera did you use?
I use a Nikon D70.
How did you hear about the contest?
In school, I take a digital photography class as an independent study period and the teacher, Mr. Cross, urged all of his classes to enter the contest.
Did you think you had a winner when you took the shot?
I didn't know if I had a winner, but I knew that due to the unusual angle and depth of field it was unique. I also knew that there are plenty of talented photographers in Sayville and that it would be a challenge entering this contest.
Can you tell us a little something about the photo?
I took it in early October on Fire Island. I went to the beach to watch the sunrise despite the overcast sky and used the lack of sun and rich shadows to create the tone of the picture. I used tire tracks that ran parallel to the ocean as my inspiration and had a friend stand at the end of the tracks. I made minor adjustments in adobe photoshop and turned the image to gray scale.
What's your history with art/photography?
It all started when I took black and white chemical photography as a freshman at Sayville High School. It was a great course that taught me the basics about film and chemical developing. Although the class was dropped the year after, I proceded to take the digital photography classes offered, exploring the art of photography. Last spring, I went to Five Towns College to enter in the "Long Island Media Arts Show" and won 'The Best in Show' award for a picture I took of a bird in Costa Rica. 15 pictures were chosen out of over 1,000 and I was honored to receive such an award. It was there that I was considered for NYSSSA (New York Summer School of the Arts) where I spent four weeks at Ithaca College studying photography. I stayed at Ithaca from July 1st to the 29th taking classes and working in three different mediums - black and white, color, and digital. It was one of the best experiences of my life and I consider myself lucky for such an opportunity. As a senior, I work with the yearbook taking pictures at various activities and sports. I plan to go to college with a major in photography.
