Peter Moreno's parents opened The Hometown Coffee Shoppe in November of 1972. Heinlein Hardware owned the building and occupied 4000 square feet. Moreno's father rented 1600 feet that was previously occupied by Reids Florist. ( They moved to Railroad Ave. & became what is today Sayville Flowers ).

In 1978 they decided to convert the Coffee Shoppe into The Tudor Room, focusing on lunch & dinner and no more breakfast. A small bar was also added for the first time.

In 1983 Moreno's parents retired, and he transformed the Tudor Room into Cricket's, giving the business new life. In 1993 Jack Heinlein retired from the Hardware business and sold his building. Crickets expanded for the first time, moving their kitchen into what was Heinlein's Paint & Housewares Dept. The new bar was put in the old kitchen and additional tables were added. A clothing store rented most of what was Heinleins for five years but in 1998 the tenant moved out east and Moreno took over the entire space.

What makes Crickets unique? Moreno states "I like to believe we put out great food at fair prices. We are also still closed on Sundays which is very unique these days. Crickets has been called the "Cheers" of Sayville by many different customers. The two best assets are the loyal staff & very loyal customers, some of whom have been eating there regularly for many, many, many years."
