Americans have always been fascinated with the lifestyles of the rich and famous. And since we don't have a royal monarchy to obsess over like our Brit counterpArts do, we're forced to direct our attentions to families like the Vanderbilts, the Kennedys and the Astors, the political and social high-rollers that defined life in NYC and on Long Island's Gold Coast in the olden days. If you'd like to see where at least one of the Roosevelts spent his Island days (no, not Teddy-he's already got Sagamore Hill), head over to the Colonial Revival-style Meadow Croft estate in Sayville.
The main mansion and its accompanying side buildings have been restored to reflect the days of Roosevelt and cronies, and free tours showcase these turn-of-the-century features. Wander around the antiquated stable, carriage house, vintage swimming pool and caretaker's cottage after you've scouted out the main house. The estate, designed by renowned architect Isaac Green, is now on the National Register of Historic Places, so you're in for the sights of a bona fide landmark. Pretend you're a guest on the property during the early 1900s, waiting for your mint julep as you mingle with the other notables out for a summer getaway.
Tours are offered at 1pm and 3pm, Sundays from June through October.
