Home to two hotels during the late 1800s and early 1900s catering to the likes of Teddy Roosevelt, Water Island has become a small private community of about 48 homes between The Fire Island Pines and Davis Park. Residents prefer a somewhat elementary lifestyle. The community only introduced electricity in the 1970s. There are no public facilities, no commercial activity. A Sunday morning newspaper is delivered via ferry during the summer months.
